Adlai Stevenson, a former governor of Illinois, was the presidential nominee, while John Sparkman, a senator from Alabama, was his running mate. They ran against the Republican ticket of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. Despite Stevenson's eloquence and intelligence, they lost decisively to Eisenhower, a war hero and popular figure, in the midst of the Cold War. This campaign marked the second consecutive defeat for Stevenson, but he remained a prominent figure in Democratic politics
